Ten English words and expressions with a surprising Persian origin

Persia is a land that evokes such a charming mystery. For millennia, that region has been a gateway between Europe, India, the Arabian Peninsula and the Far East. After all, the Silk Road passed through them, and its culture has thus helped shaping both the West and the East in some ways.

In fact, the English language still has some remnants of the influence that Persia used to have in the past.

Some words are unsurprising, like Bazaar deriving from the Persian word for “market”, or Iran, how the country formerly known as Persia is called, which means “land of Aria”.

However, there are some expressions whose Persian origin may be surprising and unknown to some, and this is why I’m going to show you ten words.
