The culture behind a Megazord: how many Rangers were played by their actors as they fought alongside Tommy played by Jason David Frank

25 Lug

Welcome back to my blog.

On tokusatsu, team-ups are something traditional, but what makes them special is when, sometimes, the original actor comes back and reprises their role.

Therefore, considering that Tommy Oliver was, before Legendary Battle, the Ranger who fought alongside more fellow Rangers, I was wondering how many actors appeared on-screen with Jason David Frank, all playing their roles. This means I will not count the SPD team-ups, as Tommy was dubbed by Jeffrey Palazzo.

Okay, let’s go.

ZORDON ERA

Now, excluding “extra” heroes like Ninjor, Auric the Conqueror, the Phantom Ranger and the Blue Senturion, in the first 5 seasons alone Tommy appeared on-screen with 20 Rangers. He was a team-mate of:

Jason, Zack, Billy, Kimberly, Trini, Adam, Aisha, Rocky and Kat (Mighty Morphin’)

Rocky, Adam, Kat, Jason, Tanya and Trey (Zeo)

Adam, Kat, Tanya and Justin (Turbo)

Of course, during the Zordon era, Rangers didn’t change, so of course you count almost everyone more than once.

Also, he teamed up with the Alien Rangers and passed the torch to the new Turbo Rangers, which means that Zhane is the only Ranger from the Zordon Era to have never fought alongside Tommy as played by their actors (is there a picture of JDF with Justin Nimmo, to compensate that?).

 FOREVER RED

Of course, I said Zhane only because Andros was there during Forever Red. If you notice, I didn’t put Leo, and that’s because Danny Slavin only returned for reshoots, so he was never onscreen with JDF, although he will be during Legendary Battle. He didn’t share a scene with the other Wild Force Rangers.

DINO THUNDER

He was the Dino Thunder Black Ranger, and they teamed up with the Ninja Storm Rangers, making the number rise up to 35.

LEGENDARY BATTLE

Legendary Battle was the first time Tommy was alongside the actors of Leo, Damon, Karone and Dana. Mike and Emily from Samurai were played by their actors as well, and of course there are the Rangers from Super Megaforce. I should point out that Robo Knight was played by the actor as well, but he wasn’t onscreen with Tommy.

Therefore, the number is 47. Fourty-seven Rangers were played by their actors as they were onscreen with Tommy Oliver. Excluding Ashley and Carlos, who never fought with him, he teamed-up with 45 of them. That’s a lot, and, up to Dino Thunder, he had met Rangers from every team.

See you, next time, here, on the Empty Blog!
